CogniFit's Science blog: There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch

There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch

“There ain’t no such thing as a free lunch”, some will say. In truth, that is one of the most accurate ideas ever invented, and commonly used in the economic theory and in business. Everything has a cost, being it monetary cost, effort, time, or simply the opportunity cost. This idea states the obvious - nothing comes for free.

Even if the person seizing the product or service isn’t directly paying for it, someone paid, someone spent the time to do it right, someone had to divert resources to make it happen. There was a cost, somewhere.

Yet, if you look around, many of the things currently understood as human rights available to everyone, are in fact available for free for most of the people benefiting from them. Someone paid for them, that's a fact, but you can use them for free. There are countless examples, available for everyone or just for a parts of the population, ranging from access to books and culture, basic health care, food, education, museums.

This discussion is focused on brain enhancement and brain fitness – should it be considered as a right everyone should have, and available for free? Or should it instead be considered as a luxury, available only to those able to directly pay for it?

At CogniFit we believe in the power of brain fitness as a key quality of life enabler. We believe that science is at the base of any brain fitness program. We believe the reason brain fitness exists, is to improve everyone’s lives, anywhere, anytime. We believe brain fitness is the new basic need of the XXI century. We believe it should and shall be available for everyone.

Yes, “There ain’t no such thing as a free lunch”, but some good things may indeed be available for free.
